Thorp School District

In 2022, Millig Design Build was selected to partner with Thorp School District, the oldest continuously operating school system in Kittitas County, Washington. The district campus consisted of two buildings, each with its distinct construction eras and unique challenges: a classic 1935 brick edifice and a 1956 structure, which had been extended in 1991.

Challenges

The original school building employed an outdated steam heating system. In addition to being prone to failure, this system lacked essential capabilities, such as air conditioning and ventilation. These limitations challenged the maintenance of a comfortable and safe learning environment, with the system's radiators posing a particular burn risk to students.

The 1956 building, though benefiting from a more advanced Variable Air Volume (VAV) system for heating, still lacked a critical cooling component due to an absent compressor.

Solutions

Our solutions addressed both modernization and energy efficiency, with a particular focus on enhancing the comfort and safety of the learning environment.

In the 1935 building, we replaced the obsolete steam heating system with high-efficiency heat pumps. These units provide both energy-efficient heating and cooling, offering a versatile solution for the school's climate control needs. To address the issue of poor air quality, we also installed a fresh air system equipped with energy recovery capabilities. This system improved ventilation and further contributed to energy savings, ensuring a healthier environment for the students.

In the 1956 building, we tackled the issue of inadequate cooling. We integrated a DX condensing unit into the existing VAV system, providing the much-needed cooling capacity.

Recognizing the need for a comprehensive solution, we also implemented broader building improvements. We upgraded the district's electrical infrastructure, improved building envelopes to reduce energy loss, and replaced old, leaky roofs.

In the gymnasium, we installed destratification fans. By promoting even temperature distribution, these fans created a more comfortable environment for everyday use and special events.

Anticipating the introduction of a new Future Farmers of America (FFA)-led gardening curriculum, we modernized the kitchen equipment. This upgrade ensured that the district's facilities were ready for both present needs and future growth.

Results

This extensive modernization project transformed the learning environment at Thorp School District. Today, students enjoy an environment that is comfortable, safe, and conducive to learning. Energy efficiency measures have reduced operational costs and minimized environmental impact, while facility upgrades have prepared the school district for future educational programs. In conclusion, the project delivered by Millig Design Build has significantly enhanced the school district's infrastructure and educational performance.
