Logan County, Colorado

In 2021, Logan County selected Millig Design Build to design and construct upgrades aimed at improving energy efficiency, building resiliency, and comfort county-wide.

Nestled in the northeast corner of Colorado sits Logan County — a tight-knit community celebrated for its waterways and trails, historic buildings, bronze sculptures, and cottonwoods that have been carved into fanciful creatures.

Logan County is a community dedicated to preserving its heritage. So, in 2021, when building systems started to fail, the county elected to leverage American Rescue Plan Act funds to upgrade its facilities with Millig Design Build.

The Millig team put together a comprehensive facilities analysis that included advanced energy modeling calibrated to the county’s utility data. From here, our engineers worked with our construction team and trade partners to develop an actionable roadmap for turn-key implementation to be completed in two phases.

Phase I:

  • Replaced antiquated lighting with LED technology at six county facilities

  • Upgraded the Justice Center’s variable air-volume (VAV) system with new high-efficiency VAV rooftop units and modern digital controls

  • Replaced the Heritage Center’s HVAC system with a high-efficiency gas/DX rooftop unit (RTU) and mini-split heat pumps

  • Designed and installed a modern LED lighting system for the county fairgrounds with advanced color and sequencing controls

Phase II:

  • Implemented an innovative solution that tied the historic Courthouse and Annex Building together with one shared water-source VRF system, which saved the county on first-cost and ongoing maintenance and energy costs

  • Retrofit the existing historical light fixtures with LED lamp technology in the Courthouse

  • Complete the LED change over the county had started in the Annex building

  • Addressed zoning concerns in the Sheriff’s Office and Courts leading to significant occupant discomfort
