HVAC Startup & Commissioning Technician

Job Description:

Millig Design Build is seeking an experienced HVAC Startup & Commissioning Technician to ensure our holistic and sustainable solutions are designed and implemented to the highest quality standard. As a Design Build contractor, you will work within Millig’s integrated team of engineers and construction professionals to develop and construct energy efficiency and infrastructure renewal projects in existing buildings, with a particular focus on HVAC systems.

In this role, you will review our designs and provide a much-needed hands-on field perspective, develop documentation to ensure subcontractor installations meet manufacturer guidelines and design criteria, and perform on-site performance testing & troubleshooting to ensure our solutions work. You will work closely with the construction team and contractors in identifying and resolving deficiencies. You will assist in training facilities staff in maintaining and operating the new systems. We are looking for someone familiar with the construction process or who is willing to learn about it. Experience with heat pumps, VRF, and refrigerant-based systems is ideal.

Anticipated compensation: $115,000 - $130,000 (including base salary and performance bonuses)

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Review drawings, submittal data and installation/operation manuals to provide complete startup and commissioning per the manufacturer’s recommendations

  • Perform pre-functional inspections/checklist and assist with start-up of commercial HVAC systems

  • Perform testing, diagnostics, and possibly repairs on HVAC systems at time of startup and/or warranty period

  • Document work by completing all paperwork on each job for each piece of equipment

  • Work alongside our construction team to identify and resolve deficiencies

  • Train facilities staff in maintaining and operating their new systems

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Manage, train, and develop other commissioning engineers to build the commissioning team in the Colorado region.

  • Provide continuous improvement ideas to assist with improving the CX Department

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • 3-5 years of experience in HVAC building systems (chillers, boilers, air handlers)

  • Knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems in commercial, institutional, and public sector

  • Experience in the automation and control systems of HVAC and lighting systems

  • Read and understand control wiring and high-voltage wiring diagrams

  • Use a variety of tools and techniques to ensure HVAC systems work as well as possible

  • Strong leadership qualities with ability and desire to train other team members

  • Exceptional communication skills with clients, contractors, and engineering teams

  • Specialized HVAC training, either through an apprenticeship or certification program

  • Travel to project sites (less than 30% of the year)

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

  • 5-7 years experience with installation and/or service of commercial HVAC systems, including air handlers, hydronics, chillers, boilers, VRF systems, etc.

  • Knowledge / familiarity with DDC building automation systems, including creating or reviewing sequence operational intent (SOI) documents

  • High level of autonomy
